We've gotten used to cars and other vehicles filling our streets, whether the vehicles are moving or parked. But cities around the world have devoted streets to protected bike lanes. And during the pandemic, New York City created an Open Streets program, devoting street space to outdoor dining and recreation.
Cars take up a majority of street space today, but in this activity, you have the chance to design your own street. We encourage you to reflect on the following questions: How might we reclaim this space to serve the needs of people? How might we plan and prioritize Open Streets in the areas that need public space the most?
